What Are Capsules?

Introduction to Capsules

Capsules are preferred by pharmaceutical manufacturers when the medication cannot be formed into a solid tablet, due to its composition or properties. They also serve as an advantageous method for incorporating drugs that require mixing with oils or liquids for enhanced bioavlability within the body.

There exist two primary types of capsules: hard and soft shell.

Hard Capsules

These are more common in use, characterized by rigid shells made from two interlocking pieces filled with medication. This formulation is well-suited for medications in powder form but is limited to drugs that dissolve easily in stomach acids.

Soft Capsules

This type features a single-piece, flexible shell designed primarily for the encapsulation of oils such as fish oil supplements or medications requiring solubility enhancement through liquid mediums. In soft capsules, the drug is dissolved into an appropriate solvent and placed within the capsule, which dissolves rapidly upon entering the stomach.

The utilization of these capsules provides two significant advantages:

1 Rapid Effect: Ideal for immediate relief scenarios where quick action is crucial.

2 Optimized Absorption: Smaller dosages can be utilized due to enhanced drug absorption from liquid suspensions, leading to more manageable capsule sizes that facilitate easier swallowing.
